FINDING & DESTROYING HORNETS

While hornets aren’t normally aggressive, they may attack you if you get within six feet of them or their colony. Fortunately, we don’t see murder hornets in our service areas (the areas in and around Aberdeen, Huron, Mitchell, Mobridge, SD; and South Dakota & Sheridan, WY), so getting stung isn’t likely to be lethal. But if they do sting you, it’ll hurt–their stinger has venom, and they can sting you more than once. 

We tend to see hornets between May and September, gathering around their favorite food sources:

• Flowers
• Trees
• Food scraps
• Sugary liquids that have been left out

 A common question we hear is, “How do I know if I have a yellow jacket, a wasp, or a hornet?”

Keep in mind that hornets are a type of wasp, but often, when people think of wasps, they’re thinking of paper wasps. The major difference between hornets and paper wasps is their length–hornets are about an inch long (which is half the length of a paper wasp). 

Hornets are also twice as long as yellow jackets, and they have a duller color. While yellow jackets are bright yellow with black stripes, hornets are either black (with a white head) or brown with yellow stripes.

If you spot one hornet, there are likely more nearby. Since hornets build their nests in and above the ground, there are plenty of areas where they can gather, such as:

• Gardens and outdoor play areas
• Abandoned rodent burrows
• Hollow tree stumps
• Garbage cans
• Crevices in outdoor siding or under roofs
• Treetops
• Garages, attics, and sheds

Again, hornets won’t attack you unless they feel threatened. The problem is, there are so many different places where they can build their nests that you could inadvertently wander near a colony. This puts you at risk of getting stung–a risk you may not be willing to take.
